Fermented with indigenous yeasts and destemmed in a 1,500 litre Georgian Qvevri. The wine macerates with the skins for 4 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered and lightly sulphited.
Description
The Vino di Anna Qvevri Don Alfio comes from the biodynamic"Don Alfio" vineyard, located 900 metres above sea level in the Piano Filici contrada, near the village of Rovitello. This vineyard is home to Nerello Mascalese vines between 90 and 100 years old, which were carefully harvested by hand in mid-October. In addition to Nerello Mascalese, the wine contains a small proportion of Nerello Cappuccio.
Winemaking
100% of the grapes were destemmed by hand and placed in a 1,000 litre Georgian qvevri, which is buried in the underground cellar near Solicchiata. Alcoholic fermentation took place naturally, thanks to indigenous yeasts. Once fermentation was completed, the qvevri was closed and the wine was left to macerate on the skins for six weeks. The wine was then pressed and returned to the qvevri for maturation on the fine lees. Bottling took place at the end of July, without fining or filtration.
Taste
Vino di Anna Qvevri Don Alfio displays pleasant aromas of dark cherry and dried fruit on the nose, complemented by floral notes. On the palate, the flavours are spicy, with hints of liquorice, chocolate and saline notes. It has a marked acidity that is balanced by a deep intensity of flavour and well-structured tannins. In its youth, these tannins are enveloping and austere, but with time they will soften and integrate, acquiring an ethereal character.
