Description

Roagna Barolo Pira is a red wine from the prestigious region of Piedmont in Italy, specifically from the Barolo appellation. This wine is made exclusively with the Nebbiolo variety, one of the most emblematic grapes of the region.
Produced in the Pira vineyard, located in Castiglione Falletto, this estate is a monopole, that is, owned exclusively by one winery, in this case, the Roagna family. With an extension of 4.88 hectares, it is the largest vineyard in the family's possession.
The Pira vineyard has a rich history and geology. Its soils are of marine sedimentary origin, with multiple stratifications of white limestone, grey and blue marls, and sands rich in minerals such as iron. This geological diversity, together with a unique microclimate protected by the Rocche di Castiglione, creates the perfect environment for growing grapes of the highest quality. In addition to Nebbiolo, varieties such as Barbera and Chardonnay are also grown in this vineyard. The vines, some of which date back to 1937, are of masal origin, meaning that they have been propagated from cuttings of the oldest vines in the vineyard, thus guaranteeing continuity and quality of production.

Winemaking

Fermentation is carried out for ten days in large wooden barrels, using a vat foot made with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the submerged cap technique is used, which can last between 60 and 75 days. The wine is aged in neutral French oak barrels for a total of five years. It is important to note that the wood used is never toasted, but is worked by means of hot steam instead of flame.

Taste

Roagna Barolo Pira is a dense and muscular wine, with prominent notes of cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and eucalyptus. Despite being light and lean-bodied, this wine finds its balance, leaving a lingering aftertaste of red fruits. It also has intense, savoury flavours, with hints of dark cherry, herbs, leather, incense and liquorice, giving it a unique and distinctive character.
