Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV RP 20 Year Old Tawny Port Quinta do Bom Retiro is a single-quinta Tawny coming in with 126 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. It was bottled in February 2020. This seems pretty much on track for what the brand normally shows, but it is especially enticing right now. It shows power, depth and spice. There are classic hints of caramel and a fresh feel. That wonderful freshness is what really sells this elegant Tawny and makes it irresistible. It is impeccably balanced. The lift to the fruit gives this some extra juiciness on the bright finish. On opening, it was a bit more ponderous, but it really woke up a couple of days later. This is pricey for a 20 Year, but it is certainly a terrific one. As always, the end-date drinking window is just a placeholder—these are very resistant and age indefinitely if there is no cork problem, although they are ready on release and do not need aging.

Features

Description

Ramos Pinto Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Years Old Tawny Porto is not the result of a modern market-driven concept, but rather of a culture of patience, blending and time that today almost seems like a luxury. At Ramos Pinto, the production of this great 20-year-old Tawny Port begins with a selection of plots from Quinta do Bom Retiro, one of the Douro’s historic estates, where the house has learnt over generations that greatness is not imposed: it is refined. The bold decision here was not to seek immediate power, but to trust in the complexity that only the passage of time, the different vats and the art of blending can offer. The valley’s traditional grape varieties —Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão —form the foundation of this wine, which is deeply rooted in the identity of the Douro. In this rugged region, with its steep slopes, extreme climate and centuries-old tradition, the vineyard exists in a state of tension between heat, rock and slope, and that harshness is imprinted on the wine.

Production

The production of Ramos Pinto Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Years Old Tawny Porto is based on a selection of wines aged in wood with an average age of 20 years. It is not a single vintage, but a precise blend of different batches that age slowly until they achieve the desired balance. Oxidative ageing in casks shapes the wine step by step: it refines the fruit, broadens the texture and enhances the nuances of nuts, spices and fine woods. The result is a Tawny Porto bottled at its peak, fully developed, harmonious and ready to drink.

Flavour

On the nose and palate, Ramos Pinto Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Years Old Tawny Porto displays a restrained and serious profile: not at all exuberant, but full of inner tension. Notes of dried apricot, candied orange peel, hazelnut, almond, fine cocoa, mild coffee and a delicate hint of cinnamon emerge. All this against an ethereal, slightly balsamic, noble and oxidative backdrop. On the palate, it is silky but never heavy; the sweetness is well-balanced, complemented by a surprising freshness for a wine of this age. Walnut, dark caramel, dried fruit, toffee and a subtle hint of liquorice sweep across the palate with a serene, long and sophisticated harmony. A 20-year-old Tawny Porto of immense elegance, complex, fresh and quietly magnificent.
