Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Uno, a serious and Mediterranean red, was produced with Monastrell from 60-year-old vines in Fontanars del Alforins, one of the oldest vineyards of the variety in the village. It fermented with 50% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and had three weeks of maceration. It has a beautiful and perfumed nose, even floral, a more elegant expression of the grape. It matured in a 5,000-liter oak vat for 14 months. It's balanced and precise, clean and fresh, with a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins. It has a contained 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. 6,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2025.

Description

Rafael Cambra Uno is crafted from a conviction that is rare in the warm Mediterranean: that Monastrell does not need to be loud to be moving. In Fontanars dels Alforins, amidst old vineyards, hills and a deeply rooted dry-farming culture, Rafa Cambra has sought a finer, more ethereal and more precise expression of the variety. His work at Casa Colaus, an estate with a restored 300-year-old winery, encapsulates this philosophy well: reviving rural heritage without nostalgia, with a bold and contemporary vision. Rafael Cambra Uno is made from old Monastrell vines, around 60 years old, planted in one of the oldest vineyards of the variety in the village, within the Valencia PDO.

Production

The grapes arrive at the winery with the seriousness befitting a single-vineyard wine. Rafael Cambra Uno ferments in stainless steel with 50% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, seeking texture, aroma and a less obvious, more vibrant extraction. Maceration lasts for three weeks, long enough to gain depth without hardening the wine. The wine is then aged for 14 months in a large 5,000-litre oak cask, a vessel that complements without overpowering, rounding out the wine without obscuring the character of the Mediterranean Monastrell. The result is a red wine of great precision, with 13.5% alcohol, natural balance and a very limited production.

Taste

On the nose, Rafael Cambra Uno opens with a fragrant beauty unusual for Monastrell: delicate flowers, restrained red and black fruit, a hint of scrubland, gentle spices and that sensation of freshness that surprises with its elegance. On the palate, it does not seek excessive volume, but rather a well-measured Mediterranean tension. It has medium body, fine tannins, a clean structure and a restrained juiciness that makes it precise. There is balance, yes, but above all there is harmony between fruit, earth, freshness and long ageing. It is a serious, dry, fragrant and serene Valencian red wine; a Monastrell wine that wins you over more with its composure than with its strength.
