Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The new release of Pol Roger's NV Extra-Brut Pure is showing nicely, unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, orange, pink grapefruit, smoke and rye toast. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, it's taut and tightly wound, with fine depth at the core, brisk acids and a pinpoint mousse, concluding with a dry finish.

Features

Description

The history of Pol Roger is one of fidelity to elegance, refinement and constancy. Since 1849, this family-run maison has cultivated an unmistakable style, sober but profound, always against the tide of fashion. In 2008, they took a bold step: to create a Champagne without dosage, without added sugar, where wine expresses itself in its purest form. Thus Pol Roger Pure Extra Brut was born, a cuvée that pays tribute to the truth of the terroir and the know-how of generations. The wine is composed of equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, from different crus of the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. Three soils, three varieties, one voice: direct, mineral and precise.

Winemaking

After a manual harvest and gentle pressing, the must for Pol Roger Pure Extra Brut undergoes a double clarification, the second at a low temperature. Each variety and origin is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks to preserve its typicity. Malolactic fermentation takes place completely, softening the natural acidity. The wine is then blended and bottled for secondary fermentation in the underground Cava cellars of Épernay, 33 metres below ground. There, Pol Roger Pure Extra Brut rests for at least four years on the lees, gaining complexity. Stirring is done by hand before disgorging, and without the addition of expedition liqueur.

Taste

In the glass, Pol Roger Pure Extra Brut has a bright pale gold colour and very fine bubbles. The nose is delicate, with notes of dried flowers, cloves, toast and lemon zest. On the palate, the entry is straight and defined, with a texture chiselled by freshness. There are hints of yeast, citrus fruit, bread crust and a background of mild spices. The finish is long, mineral and dry, with echoes of subtle honey and wet stone. A Champagne of tension and clarity, ideal for lightly dressed seafood, crab or lobster. Pol Roger Pure Extra Brut is a work of precision and purity, designed for the most attentive palates.
