Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985.

Description
Few Champagne houses embody the fusion of history and character as elegantly as Pol Roger. Founded in 1849 in Épernay and run by the same family since its origins, it was the maison that won the heart - and the glass - of Sir Winston Churchill. In honour of that mutual devotion, this cuvée was born: a liquid tribute that reflects the qualities the statesman demanded in his champagne - structure, body and maturity - and which is only made in exceptional vintages. Its exact composition remains a family secret, but we know that it is dominated by Pinot Noir from Grands Crus vineyards, complemented by Chardonnay in elegant proportions.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is meticulous from the very first cluster. The grapes are gently pressed and undergo two clarifications, one immediate and one cold, before fermenting slowly at low temperatures in stainless steel, with each parcel vinified separately. A complete malolactic fermentation softens the wine, which then rests in the depths of Pol Roger's historic Cava cellars, 33 metres underground. There, the second fermentation and a prolonged bottle ageing of at least 10 years allow the development of a very fine, creamy and persistent bubble. The stirring is still done by hand, a rarity that this house is proud to maintain. The dosage in the expedition remains at around 7 g/L, providing a perfect balance between freshness and fullness without compromising the mineral tension of the whole.
Taste
Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill presents itself with a bright golden colour and delicate bubbles. The nose, while still reserved, reveals a harmony of white flowers, citrus, dried apricot, blond tobacco and sweet spices. The palate is direct, with vibrant freshness and precise mineral tension. The structure is firm without losing refinement. Notes of blood orange, puff pastry, fresh raspberry and delicate toast follow through with balance. The finish is long, saline, with a persistence that speaks of nobility and ageing potential. A luxury Champagne that does not seek to please by excess, but by depth. Churchill would have approved it without hesitation.
