Description
Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Margot is one of those wines born of a mixture of tenderness and defiance. Olivier Leflaive named it after one of his daughters - Margot - and, with a very Burgundian smile, declared it "in opposition" to Château Margaux: not to compete, but to remind himself that greatness can also live in the everyday, in an open glass among friends. The Margot cuvée is 100% Pinot Noir, assembled from around twenty parcels spread across the Côte de Beaune, from Santenay to Pernand Vergelesses: a mosaic that seeks nerve and definition rather than muscle. The vineyard is worked in sustainable viticulture, with manual harvesting, on clay-loam soils, at 230-250 m, with vines around 30 years old.
Winemaking
For Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Margot, the grapes enter the domaine whole and are 100% destemmed, aiming for aromatic precision and fine tannin. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in open vats for about 15 days, with a measured extraction to preserve the transparency of the Pinot. The wine is aged for 16 months in barrels (100%) with a contribution of new oak (12%), and is refined for 4 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling.
Taste
Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Margot has a bright, translucent, classic ruby colour. The nose is immediate but elegant: warm cherry, strawberry and crisp raspberry, with that hint of freshly washed fruit purity that doesn't scream, it seduces. The palate is silky and juicy, clean, with a fresh acidity that stretches the drink and sharpens the finish. The tannins are fine, like a veil: they support the fruit without hardening it. And just when it seems that everything is going to be pure delicacy, a subtle spicy touch appears -more sweet pepper than wood- that leaves the impression of a serious Burgundy red wine in an accessible format: a Pinot Noir from Bourgogne that refreshes, but also invites a second glass.
