Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru bursts with aromas of pear, ripe citrus fruit, beeswax, linden blossom and smoke. Full-bodied, fleshy and unctuous, it's broad and enveloping, with a satiny attack and a lusty, nutmeg-inflected finish. If it tightens up a little in bottle, it will be superb.

Features

Description

Louis Latour produces Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru based on a philosophy of family continuity, Burgundian precision and absolute mastery of oak. Founded in Beaune in 1797, the Maison has made its knowledge of the vineyard its true strength. Here there is no showmanship, only conviction: to bring Chardonnay to its fullest expression without upsetting the balance of the terroir. Their boldest decision is to age the wine in 100 per cent new barrels, a risky move that only works because Bâtard-Montrachet possesses more than enough density, energy and nobility to absorb it. The fact that the barrels come from Louis Latour’s own cooperage speaks volumes about its character: control, precision and total confidence in its method.

Louis Latour Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru comes from an 11.86-hectare plot between Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet, separated from the legendary Montrachet by little more than a narrow road. The vines, around 40 years old, are rooted in deep gravelly soils with a limestone base, on a gentle east-facing slope. The cool climate of the Côte de Beaune, the low yield of just 35 hectolitres per hectare and the hand-harvesting result in a white wine of immense concentration, tension and ageing potential.

Winemaking

The Chardonnay grapes are brought into the winery following meticulous selection to create Louis Latour Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru. Fermentation takes place directly in French oak barrels, followed by a complete malolactic fermentation which rounds out the wine without dampening its vigour. It is then aged for between eight and ten months in new, medium-toasted barrels, crafted by the Louis Latour cooperage. This ageing process adds body, depth and ageing potential, without masking the vineyard’s mineral character. Bottling takes place once the wine has found its balance.

Taste

In the glass, Louis Latour Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru displays a bright pale gold colour. The nose combines white flowers, subtle vanilla, delicate smoke, toasted almond, brioche and ripe yellow fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, silky and deep, with notes of baked pear, candied lemon, hazelnut and toasted bread. This richness is balanced by precise acidity and a firm mineral backbone. The finish is long, briny and slightly smoky. Monumental, elegant and perfect with scallops, monkfish with saffron or lobster Thermidor.
