Guímaro Finca Capeliños 2022
£53.14 (Inc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / North Ireland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Finca Capeliños, from a field blend of centenary vines containing 70% Mencía and the rest Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón, is perfumed and ethereal but quite complete; there's often a violet pastille in this wine that makes it very attractive and showy. It fermented with 60% full clusters in oak vat and matured in used 225-liter French oak barrels for 12 to 13 months. It's medium-bodied, with contained ripeness and 13% alcohol, very tasty and with very fine tannins. It has more structure than the 2021 but keeps the freshness. 1,000 bottles were filled in July 2024.

Description
On the impossible slopes of Amandi, where the Ribeira Sacra slopes down to the river Sil, Pedro Rodríguez continues the work of his ancestors with admirable fidelity to the landscape and tradition. There, on slate and granite soils, he cultivates century-old vines that defy gravity. In the 1990s, when few believed in the potential of this heroic viticulture, his family decided to bottle for the first time what had previously been sold in demijohns. Thus Guímaro - "rebel" in Galician- was born, a name that captures his non-conformist spirit and faithfulness to his origins.
Guímaro Finca Capeliños comes from a tiny plot of 0.6 hectares at the foot of a hillside in Amandi. The vines, over a hundred years old, are mostly Mencía, although other native varieties coexist among them. This mixed soil of slate and granite gives the wine a severe and mineral identity, as if the terroir spoke directly through each sip.
Winemaking
The harvest of Guímaro Finca Capeliños is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard. The grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in open vats of used French oak, with 50% whole bunches. The grapes are trodden with the feet, respecting traditional methods. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to used 225 and 500 litre barrels, where it is aged for over a year. It is not clarified or filtered, and hardly any sulphur is added before bottling.
Taste
Guímaro Finca Capeliños expresses itself with restraint and depth. On the nose, it displays aromas of slate smoke, dried violets, black cherry, wild blackberry and an echo of cured meat. The palate is taut, linear, with polished tannin and firm structure. The vibrant acidity and the salinity of the granite push it towards a long, austere finish, but full of nuances: wet earth, graphite, dried herbs. A vertical, mountain wine that does not seek to please easily, but to thrill those who know how to listen to the whisper of its land.
