Description
In the limestone heart of Sancerre, where the hills seem sculpted by centuries of wind and chalk, Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge was born, one of the most faithful expressions of Pinot Noir in the Loire Valley. Against the backdrop of the prominence of Sauvignon Blanc in the area, the Vacheron family decided, with boldness and conviction, to go for red. It was an almost heretical decision at the time, but deeply rooted in their biodynamic philosophy: let the soil speak, let the climate whisper, and let the grapes translate. The vines - some planted on pure flint slopes, others on limestone - are worked by hand, without chemicals, in total harmony with the lunar cycles. Vacheron Sancerre Rouge is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, grown in some of the best climats in the appellation, where the roots sink into fossil layers that give the wine its unmistakable mineral energy.
Winemaking
The Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the grapes are partially de-stemmed and placed by gravity in truncated cone-shaped wooden vats, where they ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Extraction is gentle, with controlled pumping over, seeking balance rather than power. The wine is then transferred to neutral oak vats and barrels, where it rests for 12 to 18 months without fining or filtering. The whole process aims to preserve the varietal character and the minerality of the terroir, without any superfluous intervention or make-up.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge is a brilliant, translucent ruby colour. The nose displays a refined perfume of sour cherry, redcurrant and wild raspberry, intertwined with earthy notes, white pepper and a delicate hint of graphite and smoke. The palate is pure balance: medium body, very fine tannins, lively tension. Its vibrant acidity gives it agility, while the mineral undertones - flint, wet chalk - add depth and persistence. As it opens up, subtle notes of rosemary and black tea emerge. The finish is long, clean, almost saline, with a restrained elegance more reminiscent of Burgundy than the typical Loire rusticity. A precise, austere and exciting Pinot Noir.
