Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
As with most of the 2022s, the 2022 El Carretil didn't quite reach the level of the bottled 2021 that I tasted next to it. It showed some toasty notes (this is a wine that seems to take the toast of the barrel more), but apparently, in a few months it should get integrated. This has a lower pH and some reactive tannins, with grip.

Description
Artadi El Carretil is the most sober and mineral expression of the Artadi universe. It was born in Laguardia, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, where three plots planted in 1930, 1975 and 1988 embrace poor clay and limestone soils on sandstone rock. At an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, the continental climate marks a slow ripening process, which produces tense, deep wines with restrained energy. This plot of just 3.64 hectares is worked with absolute respect for the environment: organic farming, minimal intervention, and a philosophy that favours the character of the soil over fashions. Made exclusively from Tempranillo, in 2015, Artadi left the Rioja DOCa to free wines like this one from regulatory constraints, in a bold bid for authenticity.
Winemaking
The harvest of Artadi El Carretil is manual, with a meticulous selection of clusters and berries. After a cold maceration of 24 to 48 hours, fermentation takes place in open wooden vats for 10 to 12 days, with two pumping-overs per day. Artadi El Carretil undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels and is aged for 12 months in French oak, a third of which is new. The ageing is designed to accompany, not dominate.
Taste
In the glass, Artadi El Carretil is sober, compact, deeply mineral. The black fruit -blackberry, plum, blueberry- appears discreetly, without saturating. The nose hints of violets, white pepper, graphite and a touch of laurel. It is a wine of substance rather than form, where the limestone is perceived in every trace.
On the palate Artadi El Carretil shows vibrant acidity, structured by fine, slightly dry tannins that melt into an enveloping texture. The palate is firm, with tension and purity. The ageing adds notes of cocoa, dry spices and a background of blond tobacco. Persistent and elegant, with a saline and earthy finish that reflects the austerity of the soil. A wine that speaks softly, but leaves its mark. Perfect for sober dishes, slow-cooked meats or simply for those who are looking for truth in the glass.
