Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 San Lázaro is quite fruit-driven and primary, aromatic and clean, pleasant but without the depth and complexity of the 2021 that I tasted next to it. It has a medium-bodied palate, and it's fine-boned, balanced and with fine tannins. It's a more approachable version of San Lázaro.

Description
In the heart of Laguardia, on a small plot of just 1.62 hectares planted in 1956, Artadi San Lázaro was born, one of the purest and most quietly radical expressions of Rioja Tempranillo. This ancient vineyard, planted on limestone-clay soils with sandy textures formed in the Quaternary era, offers a poor but deeply alive soil, well oxygenated and with a microclimate protected from the southeast winds. The decision to vinify this site separately was a courageous one: not to seek volume, but truth. Thus, Artadi San Lázaro became a silent manifesto of what Artadi seeks in its wines: authenticity, plot identity and absolute respect for the land.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with a rigorous selection of berries and bunches. After a cold maceration of 24 to 48 hours, the fermentation of Artadi San Lázaro is carried out in open wooden vats for 10 to 12 days, with two daily pumping-overs to provide smoothness and structure. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels and the ageing process lasts 12 months, with a third of the wine aged in new French oak. This measured ageing respects the fruit and allows the vineyard to express itself without make-up, allowing Artadi San Lázaro to keep its plot identity intact.
Taste
Artadi San Lázaro opens with a precise, clean and subtly floral nose. Notes of black fruits (blueberry, blackberry), blue flowers, liquorice, graphite and a background of damp earth and limestone. The palate is vertical, with a firm entry and sharp freshness. The tannins are abundant but fine, with a mineral dust texture. The fruit is restrained, ripe but never sweet, with echoes of black cherry and fresh plum. Subtle notes of spice, cocoa and tobacco leaf accompany the wine. The finish is long, saline, almost earthy, with a persistence that speaks of the origin and age of the vineyard. It is a wine for those who are looking for character without fuss, restrained power and a minerality that imposes itself elegantly.
