Description
Anders Frederik Steen works on the basis of intuition, but also out of an almost stubborn conviction: wine must speak with its own voice, even if that voice is neither comfortable nor accommodating. Anders Frederik SteenComme un Double Vitrage stems precisely from that philosophy. This is not an Alsace rosé designed to be instantly appealing, but rather to convey a very personal vision of the vineyard, the ageing process and the passage of time. In Alsace, a land of rich tradition and marked climatic contrasts, Steen finds the perfect setting for this type of natural wine, where purity lies not in perfection, but in the authenticity of the winemaking process. The blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Gris, 20% Sylvaner and 20% Muscat seems almost a statement of intent: fruit, tension, body and aroma in an unstable yet deeply expressive balance.
Production
Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘Comme un Double Vitrage’ is produced as a co-fermented blend, with the four varieties fermented together from the outset. All the grapes are destemmed and macerated together for 4 to 5 days, a sufficient time to extract not only colour, but also that subtle tannic texture that defines its character. After maceration, the must is pressed and transferred directly to an outdoor fibreglass tank, where fermentation takes place very slowly over almost a year. Following a racking in the summer of 2021, the wine is transferred to the cellar and into barrels, where it spends a further two years ageing. Barrel ageing, carried out without topping up the barrels, encourages deliberate oxidation, which is an essential part of its style.
Taste
On the nose, Anders Frederik Steen Comme un Double Vitrage offers notes of dried flowers, delicate red fruit, citrus peel and a noble oxidative note reminiscent of air-dried apple and fresh walnut. Muscat leaves a subtle, never intrusive floral echo. On the palate, it has vigour, depth and a slight tannic structure that sets it apart from an easy-drinking rosé. Notes of pomegranate, wild strawberry, bitter orange and a salty, earthy and spicy undertone emerge. The acidity keeps it lively, vibrant and long on the palate. It is a wine by Anders Frederik Steen that is free-spirited, serious and deeply unique.
