Jean François Ryon is the creative face behind the natural wine cellar Domaine Des Coteaux du Val, located in the Jura region of France, on a former domain of the abbey of Saint-Claude. Ryon is a historian by training, which translates as an open book. He is an exciting and cultured person, representing Saint Vernier, patron saint of winegrowers, during the Habsbourg period.
Jean François Ryon's vineyard
He has a small estate, an area of 2.68 hectares. Jean François started in 1987 and launched his first wines in 1992. He is the 14th generation of vignerons located in the village of Vernantois. He grows Chardonnay, Poulsard, Trousseau and Savagnin. It has always done so organically, certified by Ecocert in 2003.This village, which is now part of the wine route, was one of the first wine-growing areas in the 19th century and has managed to preserve this tradition. The vines are grown on blue marl soil, dating from the Jurassic and Triassic periods. Ryon's vineyards are located on slopes up to 300 metres above sea level. Their wines share this typical local flavour of the land, which is very characteristic.
Wines of Jean François Ryon
His wines are aged without additives for at least 20 months in oak barrels. The work is always done as close as possible to nature, with the minimum intervention, no additives of any kind and no - or the minimum - SO2. Among their highlights we can find Les Coteaux de Val de Sorne Côtes du Jura Chardonnay 2008, their fragrant and light Les Coteaux de Val de Sorne Côtes du Jura Trousseau 2016, as well as Les Coteaux de Val de Sorne Poulsard 2018 and Les Coteaux de Val de Sorne Côtes du Jura Savagnin 2016. Vinification is carried out with indigenous yeasts, limiting the use of sulphur to a minimum or none at all.
