Buy Wine from Hermann Dönnhoff
The Hermann Dönnhoff winery is located in the Nahe region, specifically in the town of Oberhausen an der Nahe. The first official mention of the name Dönnhoff dates back to 1761, indicating a rich winemaking tradition. From the very beginning, Hermann Dönnhoff (1880-1953) focused on planting Riesling vines in prized vineyards. The founder's grandson, Helmut Dönnhoff, took over the reins in 1971, setting a standard of quality and style that brought the winery worldwide recognition.
Today, it is Cornelius Dönnhoff, belonging to the fourth generation, who runs the winery with the same passion and dedication.Vineyards
The winery owns 28 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are dedicated to the cultivation of Riesling grapes and the remaining 20% to different varieties of Pinot. Among its most outstanding vineyards are: HERMANNSHÖHLE, considered the best classified site in the region. This south-facing, steeply sloping vineyard is located in a meander of the Nahe river. Its soils are a mixture of blackish grey slate, extrusive igneous rock, porphyry and limestone, resulting in wines with a profound expression of "Terroir"; BRÜCKE, a 1 ha single vineyard which benefits from the moderating influence of the river, creating a special microclimate. Its soil, composed of grey slate rock covered by a layer of loamy marl, is ideal for the production of distinctive and elegant Riesling wines; DELLCHEN, with a soil of igneous rock mixed with grey slate, this vineyard offers optimal conditions for the ripening of Riesling grapes; FELSENBERG, a famous old site with degraded volcanic porphyry soils, where vines grow in extreme conditions; and HÖLLENPFAD, a steeply sloping vineyard in a small valley of the Nahe river, characterised by red, weathered sandstone.
Philosophy
The Hermann Dönnhoff winery has always been characterised by its commitment to quality and tradition. In the production of its wines, especially the Riesling, a combination of wooden vats and stainless steel tanks is used, taking advantage of the benefits of each. The time the wine spends in each tank depends on the characteristics of the vintage. This combination of traditional techniques with modern innovations reflects the winery's philosophy: respecting tradition while striving for excellence in each bottle.
