Buy Wine from Château Pichon Longueville Baron
Château Pichon Longueville Baron has its origins when Thérèse, founder's daughter, gets married to Baron Jacques Pichon Longueville and receives the estate as wedding present. From this marriage, Joseph de Pichon Longueville is born, a heir that will manage and take over the family business. Being 90 years old, shortly before he died, he took the wise decision of distributing the land among his five children in two parts: sons were to receive two fifths of the estate and daughters the other three fifths. From that moment on, two acclaimed properties are born in Pauillac: Château Pichon Longueville Baron, the sons' part and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, property of the daughters. For this reason, both châteaux are parted by a narrow regional road and it is very easy to mistake one for another. Are there any differences in their wines? Perhaps Comtesse de Lalande wines are more subtle and feminine than Baron's.
As usual in Bordeaux estates, the château passed through many hands as it has always been a speculative marketplace. Therefore, Pichon Longueville Baron estate was sold in 1933 to Bouteiller family, former proprietors of Château Palmer, but on the 70's the lack of investment forced the family to sell it to AXA Insurance Group. With the new management, refurbishing works start and Jean-Michel Cazes, Lynch Bages manager, is recruited to return the old Pichon Longueville Baron style to its wines. In the year 2000 Jean-Michel Cazes quit the technical management and was replaced by Christian Seely, who is also in charge of other AXA wineries such as Quinta do Noval in Porto, Cantenac-Brown in Margaux, Suduiraut in Sauternes and Domaine de l'Arlot in Burgundy.
In 1855, during the Universal Exhibition in Paris, Château Pichon Longueville Baron was awarded with the classification 2ème Cru Classé. The château is located in Pauillac commune and has 73 vineyard hectares (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot) near Château Latour, where the prevailing soils are deep and with gravel. The plantation density is of 9.000 vines per hectare and they are 30 years old in average. Pichon Longueville Baron produces concentrated, tannic, spiced and elegant wines.
About 215.000 bottles of Château Pichon Longueville Baron are sold every year. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 80% of them being new ones, for 18 months. Vanilla, cassis and tobacco are the classical scents of the wine… A true delight!
