Buy Wine from Bodegas Fernando Remírez de Ganuza
Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza was born in 1989 as a personal commitment of its founder, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza. The whole process is driven by a single idea: to be faithful to the grape. The objective has always been to make a wide selection of grapes and to intervene as little as possible in the winemaking process in order to be as faithful as possible to both the vintage and the vineyard.

The story of Fernando Remírez de Ganuza is a story of adventure, of going from one business to another. He is originally from Meano, a small town in Navarra near Álava, where the local industry is the manufacture of chorizo sausages. He worked there for a while with his father, but his true passion was buying and selling.
At the age of 28 he was already a millionaire and had gone bankrupt twice. He bought and sold properties, apartments and everything else until he ended up buying vineyards. He referred to himself as a "fixer" of estates. He would buy plots of land and combine them to form estates that he would then sell. He identified the best vineyards, made a name for himself and needed only one step to start the wine business.
He finally took it in 1990. He chose 27 precious hectares for himself, as well as three historic farmhouses in the center of the small village of Samaniego, which he renovated into a winery and a house.
In 1991, he started making wine, just to see what would happen. He had the idea of removing a few clusters from each vine in selected vineyards to see if the remaining clusters would improve in quality. When he compared the two, he found that the grapes from the unloaded vines were much better.
Subsequently, despite the grape harvesters' protests, he forced them to pick the grapes in 12-kilo boxes so that they would not arrive broken at the winery. Now everyone does it. He also believes that it is better to pick the grapes before they enter the winery. He looked for a sorting table, which almost all high-end wineries now have. But, as there was none at the time, he had one made by the blacksmith in Elciego. That was when the first selection table in the country appeared.
In 1992 he created his first Remírez de Ganuza, which he launched on the market in 1997 at a price of 2,650 pesetas a bottle - a ridiculous price! That is why he sold the first 20,000 bottles he made. At the end of the year, he re-released 100,000 bottles of the 1994 vintage, which also sold very well. Isn't it impressive?
And this is how little by little Fernando Remirez made his way in this impressive world of wine!
The vineyards
More than 80 hectares of Tempranillo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasa grapes are grown in the vineyards. They are distributed among six localities of the Sierra Cantabria: Samaniego, Leza, Elciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Laguardia and Ábalos. The selection has taken into account the habitat, the microclimate, the orientation of the plot, the low productivity of the vines and the age of the vineyards, whose average age is fifty years. This large plot allows for self-sufficiency of high quality grapes.
Architecture and location
The winery is located in the heart of Samaniego and is made up of historic buildings of the village, which are beautifully integrated into the typical architecture of the area.
The various buildings that make up the winery are dedicated to the different stages of winemaking, such as the barrel area, the bottle racks, the cold chambers or the selection area, and are organized around a large central courtyard saved by a natural water channel.
The classic design of the winery, with an interior ceiling made of centuries-old wooden beams, contrasts with one of the most avant-garde and inventive winemaking processes of today.
Winemaking
The wine is made in small, specially constructedstainless steel truncated cone-shaped tanks and French oak vats that are renewed every three years. This is where the alcoholic fermentation of the wine takes place. It is then transferred to fresh oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.
A prestigious winery
Elements such as the selection table, the cold chambers and the use of fresh barrels for wine aging are already common in other wineries of international prestige, although they were not common at the time they were used at Remírez de Ganuza. Other aspects, such as the bag used in the extraction of Trasnocho or the machine used to wash the grapes with their own must, are signs of the winery's continuous innovation and search for excellence.
And you, haven't you tried the wines of Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza yet? You will love them!
