Buy Wine from Plà de Bages
Approved by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1995, the Plà de Bages appellation of origin, located in the Bages region of Barcelona, is an area with a long winemaking tradition located between the mountain formations of Montserrat, the Castelltallat range and the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park.
Although Bages is relatively close to the coast, the pre-coastal mountain range prevents the direct entry of sea winds, so the appellation enjoys a Mediterranean mountain climate with a clear continental tendency, so there is a quite marked thermal difference between the hot, dry summer and the mild winter.
Pine, holm oak and oak forests surround the vineyards (500 hectares) located between 200 and 500 meters above sea level on diverse soils: in the central plain generated by the erosion of the Llobregat river we find material of alluvial origin; in the high plateaus red loams and clays stand out; finally in the mountain ranges of sedimentary and tectonic origin the soils are composed of loams, sands, calcareous rocks, conglomerates and chalk.
The native varieties that make up the Plà de Bages are Picapoll Blanc for whites and Picapoll Negre, Sumoll and Mandó for red wines. Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer are also authorized as white varieties and Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Garnacha Tinta for red wines.
We must not forget without hesitation the Oller del Mas winery as one of the most representative of the Plà de Bages, where you will find wines with tons of maturity under a fresh profile and a good interpretation of the immeasurable Merlot.
