Buy Wine from Empordà
The Empordà appellation of origin was not approved by the Ministry of Agriculture until 1975, however it is known that since the 1960s the winegrowers of the region began the process of obtaining the appellation. At present, the Empordà has an approximate surface area of 2,000 hectares under cultivation and a total of 49 wineries belonging to the Empordà wine appellation.
What is special about the area? The region, located in the most northeastern sector of the Iberian Peninsula and belonging to the province of Gerona, enjoys a pure Mediterranean climate with high sunshine, notable rainfall and a strong north wind (tramontana) that has a positive effect on the health of the vines. The alluvial and slate soils are sandy in texture and poor in organic matter, so in some cases drip irrigation is used to combat the hot periods that plague the region.
The DO Empordà has two production subzones: Alt Empordà, in the most extreme part of the North, from Figueras to the French border, covers 35 municipalities; and Baix Empordà is delimited to the north by the Montgrí massif, to the southwest by the Gavarres massif, and to the east by the Mediterranean. There are 13 municipalities in this subzone.
As for the varieties grown, since the end of the 1990s there has been a strong interest in foreign varieties planted on trellises such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah for red wines and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer for white wines. However, there are still some native vines such as Cariñena, Lledoner, Garnacha Peluda for the production of rustic, alcoholic and sweet rancid red wines. The native white grapes are Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Roja, Macabeo, Moscatel de Alejandría and Picapoll.
Martí Fabra is one of the most unique wineries in the Empordà, located in a landscape where rosemary, thyme and lavender abound and where its wines speak of landscape and native varieties with Mediterranean flavor.
