Description

In the remote north of Citrusdal Mountain, amid sun-scorched hillsides and weathered sandstone soils, Eben Sadie rediscovered an old, almost forgotten vineyard. Planted on dry land, with no irrigation or modern concessions, it stood on a harsh terroir, aptly named Skurfberg-the "rugged mountain"-for its sharp, inhospitable landscape. There, long-lived vines of Chenin Blanc (or Steen, as it is known in South Africa) offered sparse but intensely expressive fruit. Sadie, faithful to her philosophy of minimum intervention and maximum fidelity to the origin, saw in this vineyard a wild jewel capable of speaking softly, but with mineral depth and absolute transparency.

Winemaking

The Sadie Family Skurfberg is hand harvested in small 20 kg crates, followed by immediate cooling of the grapes: essential in an area where temperatures exceed 35°C during the harvest. The whole bunch is pressed slowly, allowing a slight natural settling in the collecting tank. The must ferments spontaneously in old vats, without temperature control or additives. Fermentation can take weeks to start and last up to six months, with malolactic fermentation behaving naturally. The wine ages 12 months on lees without racking, and is bottled directly with a minimal dose of SO₂.

Taste

The Sadie Family Skurfberg is a fascinating contradiction: structure and lightness, fiery sunshine and pungent freshness. On the nose, notes of lemon peel, dried mandarin, wildflower and beeswax. Then hints of dry pear, quince and a salinity reminiscent of hot stone after rain. The palate is compact, electric, with a vibrant acidity that supports it like a backbone. The finish is long, dry, with a mineral tension that lingers. A South African Chenin Blanc that does not seek to please, but to reveal. Austere, profound, absolutely honest: a wine not to drink, but to contemplate.
