Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I was blown away by the 2004 Sot Lefriec, one of Laurent Corrio's favorite vintages and one that has evolved magnificently in bottle. They are going to sell a few hundred bottles, as they have kept some stock. If you want to find a mature, classical and powerful red Penedès with the input of the French varieties complementing the 25% Cariñena (it has 50% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon), this is your perfect candidate. The wine was very powerful and a bit tough when young, and time in bottle has done it good. There is good aromatic complexity, with some balsamic notes intermixed with aromas of Mediterranean herbs and an earthy touch. It's closer to classical Bordeaux than most other wines from the region, as it's serious and structured, with a powerful palate with resolved tannins and a dry finish that calls for food. I have to agree with Corrio that this has to be one of the finest vintages of Sot Lefriec, and the wine can still live a good decade in bottle, maybe more. Austere rather than exuberant, with no room for sweetness. I also tasted a bottle of the 1999, the first vintage, and at age 20 it's still going strong.
