Sierra Cantabria Organza 2023
£27.73 (Inc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / North Ireland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The golden-colored white 2023 Organza is expressive and fruit-forward, with notes of peaches, dried yellow flowers and chamomile. It's a textured vintage, with depth and less exuberance, with very good freshness, and in the long run, it should be a winner. There's more nuance in 2023 than in 2022. It was produced with a blend of 40% Viura, 35% Malvasía Riojana and 25% Garnacha Blanca, with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.17. A very Riojan white. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Description
On the slopes of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where the mountains merge with the vineyards, Marcos Eguren wanted to challenge Rioja conventions by making a white wine with the soul of a major wine. He opted for Viura ( 45%), Malvasía (25%) and Garnacha Blanca (30%), traditional varieties treated with the same rigour as the great reds. The project was born from the desire to express purity, territory and elegance, without concessions, from a landscape of chalky-clay soils and an Atlantic-Mediterranean climate.
Here the land is worked with integrated agriculture, without herbicides or pesticides, following the rhythms of nature. Respect for the environment is not a strategy, but a deeply rooted conviction.
Elaboration
Sierra Cantabria Organza is made from hand-picked grapes, which undergo a 12-hour cold maceration with their skins, followed by fermentation in new French oak barrels. The wine then spends 11 months in the same barrels on its fine lees, with bâtonnage for the first six months. The use of the vineyard's own yeasts reinforces the identity of the wine, which is defined more by texture and minerality than by fruit expression.
Taste
Sierra Cantabria Organza displays a restrained and refined nose: dried white flowers, citrus peel, fresh butter, almond and an echo of fine wood. The palate is full, enveloping and structured, with vibrant acidity and a creamy texture. Notes of ripe pear, fennel, beeswax and a saline-mineral background reminiscent of the soil in which it was born. The finish is long, dry, with austere elegance.
A white wine that does not seek to seduce with exuberance, but with depth and precision. Ideal for those who are looking for a serious, gastronomic white wine with ageing potential.
