Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2024 La Casilla benefited from the precision in the harvest dates because of the low yields, so they had plenty of time to pick the grapes at their peak. It has lots of finesse and freshness, contained ripeness and 12.5% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.58 and 5.8 grams of acidity. The grapes, 60% from limestone soils, 20% clay and limestone and 20% from stony soils, fermented with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in 4,500-liter oak vats, where the wine matured for nine months. This is really elegant and balanced, with the more serious profile of the reds from the vintage, all of them overdelivering for the price asked. It's subtle and nuanced, floral and perfumed but whispering more than shouting, with notes of red cherries, very good freshness and refined tannins, making it fine-boned. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2025.

Features

Description

La Casilla, an exceptional wine from the Manchuela appellation, is a pure expression of the Bobal grape variety. This wine, created by winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce, is a single varietal that reflects the essence of the Bobal grape in its most authentic form.
La Casilla comes from vineyards located in Iniesta, with silt and clay soils and altitudes varying between 804 and 950 metres. These vineyards, between 30 and 70 years old, are the heart of this wine. The viticulture practised is organic and biodynamic, with no soil enrichment or irrigation. Cover crops are maintained and frequent ploughing of the soil is avoided, thus preserving its structure.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo cold maceration with whole bunches. Subsequently, the musts are trodden with the feet. The wine is transferred to 600-litre French oak barrels, where it spends 10 months ageing on its lees. This process results in an unfiltered and unclarified wine, suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Taste

La Casilla is a complex blend of aromas and tastes. It has dense spicy aromas of blackberry and liquorice, with a hint of lavender in the background. On the palate, it is concentrated and fleshy, offering flavours of sour cherry and dark berries, with a suggestion of caramelised flowers. The finish is long and powerful, with lingering smokiness and soft tannins. This flavour profile makes La Casilla an exceptionally balanced and expressive wine, reflecting the true nature of the Bobal grape.
