Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The eponymous 2020 Pittacum is toasty and ripe, with 14.5% alcohol, reflecting a warm year and an élevage in used barrels for eight months. It has a profile of wines from the 2000s, with more generous ripeness and oaking. It finishes dry and with abundant tannins that are going to require more time in bottle and/or powerful food. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

Description
Pittacum is the result of an obsession with the Bierzo, of an intimate bond between winegrower and land. For more than twenty years, the two hundred plots that make up its forty hectares were studied one by one, searching for soils with a true viticultural vocation: deep, well-drained slopes, just the right fertility, which induce balanced ripening and clusters full of identity. Here, in the temperate continental climate of the Bierzo, with its marked thermal amplitude, the Mencía reaches a refined expression, with freshness, structure and character. Pittacum arises from the conviction that respect is the best way to quality: minimum intervention, precise selection, patience.
Winemaking
The grapes destined for Pittacum arrive at the winery in small 12 kg crates so as not to be damaged. Each bunch is then checked by hand on the sorting table. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks for about 15 days at 25 °C, with gentle punching down and light pumping over, aiming for controlled extraction. After bleeding, the wine rests for a month in tanks before being transferred to 220-litre French oak barrels, where it remains for eight months without racking, in a cool and quiet cellar. Finally, Pittacum is bottled and rests for at least 18 months before being released onto the market. A measured, precise process that favours the expression of terroir and elegance.
Taste
In the glass, Pittacum Mencía displays a deep ruby colour with violet reflections. The nose is intense but refined: black fruits such as blackberry, plum and redcurrant intertwine with notes of leather, sweet spices and black olive. In the background, a whisper of damp earth and dry leaf reminds us of its origin. The palate is structured, with firm but well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and vibrant freshness. Fruity without excess, with mineral nuances and an enveloping passage, it offers a long, slightly spicy and dry finish. It is a wine for those who value the tension between fruit, ageing and soil. An authentic, serious Mencía, with the soul of the mountains and the pulse of an artisan.
