Oxer Iraun 2023
£34.07 (Inc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / North Ireland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The white 2023 Iraun was produced with Viura, Calagraño and Malvasía Riojana from old vines in the villages of Elvillar and Laguardia from early-harvested grapes to keep contained ripeness and 13% alcohol. It has a pale color and a spicy and smoky nose with leesy notes from the fermentation and aging in 600-liter barrels and Austrian foudres. It has a tender palate with integrated acidity, clean flavors with some creaminess and spiciness but keeping the poise and balance. 3,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Description
Iraun was born as a tribute by Oxer Bastegieta to his homeland and to the language that inhabits it: Basque. In a region dominated by reds, making a white wine with an identity was an act of resistance, almost a poetic declaration. The name -Iraun, "to remain"- and the symbol of the ouroboros on the label refer to eternity: the beginning and the end fused in an unbroken cycle. Iraun is built on a century-old vineyard planted in 1919 in Elvillar(Rioja Alavesa), at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, on poor calcareous clay soils. The plot, which coexists with Tempranillo, delivers just 3,000 kg/ha of white grapes in blend: 80% Viura, 9% Calagraño, 4% Garnacha Blanca, 3% Maturana Blanca and 3% Malvasía Riojana.
Winemaking
The vinification of Iraun starts with a controlled hyperoxidation during pressing, looking for structure and natural stability. The must ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and finishes its transformation in earthenware jars and used 600-litre French oak barrels, where it remains for 12 months on the lees, without aggressive intervention. The ageing process adds volume, without taking away from the minerality.
Taste
Iraun displays a restrained and precise bouquet: ripe white fruit (pear, apple), lemon peel, dried flowers and a subtle salinity. It is not an exuberant wine, but with slow layers, which invite you to decipher it with time. The palate is dry, with tense, elegant acidity and a palate reminiscent of wet stone. The finish is long and saline, with echoes of brioche, raw almonds and scrubland herbs. It does not seek to please with sweetness or opulence: it is an austere, honest white wine that speaks of depth, old earth and permanence. A wine that, rather than being drunk, can be meditated upon.
