Description
Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is Burgundy in its purest form: Pinot Noir from old vines in Gevrey Chambertin (Côte de Nuits), where limestone and veins of clay give the wine a balance of muscle and nerve. Maxime Cheurlin, who took the reins of the historic Domaine Georges Noëllat at a very young age, chose a bold path: less artifice, more precision. The locals say that his greatest ‘rebellion’ was resisting the temptation of exuberant oak to let the vineyard speak first; in Gevrey, that decision is as distinctive as a signature: restraint, energy and an elegance that seeks no applause.
Vinification
In Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, the grapes enter the winery following meticulous selection and a vatting process designed to extract precision rather than power. Fermentation is guided with the calm of someone who prioritises texture and aromatic definition; maceration is gentle, seeking fine tannins and crisp fruit. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (approx. 40% new), imparting structure and a hint of spice without sweetening the profile. The aim is for the wine to reach bottling with all the threads in place: polished, yes, but with its backbone intact and minerality at the forefront.
Taste
Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes presents itself in the glass as a brilliant ruby with garnet highlights. The nose opens with cherry, raspberry and a hint of redcurrant, followed by undergrowth (damp leaves, fine earth), a touch of pepper and a sensation of cold stone. On the palate it is fresh, silky and straightforward: a juicy attack, tight and elegant tannins, and acidity that cleanses and lengthens the finish. The red fruit rests on a mineral base and finishes long, with a salty, spicy echo. Let it breathe: after an hour’s decanting, it stops whispering and starts telling a story—serious, deep and deliciously Burgundian.
