Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Terreus Cima de Cueva Baja has the spicy nose that made it famous. It's a blend from an exceptional lieu-dit at 800+ meters above sea level where the old vines deliver 3,500 kilograms of grapes per hectare. It fermented destemmed in stainless steel, where it also underwent malolactic. The élevage was in French oak barrels and lasted for 20 months. It has notes of ripe berries, aromatic herbs and that creamy and spicy twist. It's suave and full-bodied, with very fine and elegant tannins, and it's juicy and silky, filling your mouth, with clean and focused flavors that last for a long time. It's very fine-boned, exceptional for the conditions of the vintage. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.

Description
The story of Mauro Terreus Cima de Cueva Baja was born from a vision: to capture the essence of a single site with a wine that does not seek to please everyone, but to move those who know how to listen to the land. From Cueva Baja, in the municipality of Tudela de Duero (Valladolid), this wine is made under the protection of the Castile and León PGI, in an area with a great winemaking tradition. In this high altitude area -between 837 and 862 metres above sea level- Tempranillo grapes find their maximum expression in clay soils and 30 to 35 year old vines trained on goblet and trellis. The climate, with marked thermal contrasts, moulds a concentrated, ripe but always fresh fruit. The decision to harvest by hand, with selection in the field, reflects the winery's commitment to detail and purity. There are no shortcuts here: only a constant search for identity.
Winemaking
The vinification of Mauro Terreus Cima de Cueva Baja respects the integrity of the grapes: gravity input using the OVI system, no pumps, no rush. Fermentation is carried out in a controlled manner to preserve the fruit and enhance varietal expression. The wine is aged for 21 months in new 225-litre French oak barrels. This ageing adds complexity and structure, without dominating the wine, but rather elevating its character. After its time in the barrel, it rests in the bottle and is refined before being released onto the market. Each step of the process is designed to respect what the vineyard gives.
Taste
In the glass Mauro Terreus Cima de Cueva Baja shows a deep red colour with violet reflections. On the nose, it displays ripe black fruit -plum, blackberry-accompanied by spicy notes, cocoa, balsamic and a mineral background reminiscent of damp soils. The oak is integrated, with echoes of fine vanilla and roasted coffee. The palate is structured but fluid, with polished tannins and a balancing acidity. The finish is long, with hints of fruit in liqueur, earth and sweet spices. A serious red wine, with nerve, capable of thrilling with its elegance and restrained strength. Ideal for those who seek not only pleasure in a wine, but also landscape and depth.
