Description

Réno Pacalet comes from one of those families where wine isn’t something you learn – it’s something you breathe. But Maison Réno wasn’t founded to capitalise on the family name or to rest on its Burgundian heritage. After training in viticulture, working in Tuscany and collaborating with his father, Philippe Pacalet, he decided to found his own maison in Chassagne Montrachet in 2023. His approach was clear and bold: tiny batches, hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention, guiding the wine rather than correcting it.

Maison Réno Mercurey is pure Pinot Noir from Les Champs Michaux, a plot situated in the north of the appellation, at an altitude of around 340 metres. The vines, which are nearly 50 years old, grow on clay-limestone soils covered with stony, iron-rich red earth. Nestled amongst cool slopes and close to the forest, the vineyard combines the typical depth of Mercurey with a more airy, vibrant and mineral character. Here, the Côte Chalonnaise reveals a particularly candid side: less solemn, perhaps, but full of truth, tension and landscape.

Winemaking

The grapes for Maison Réno Mercurey are harvested by hand and arrive in small crates to preserve the integrity of the bunches. They are vatted whole, without destemming and with virtually no sulphur, allowing the indigenous yeasts to guide the fermentation. Maceration lasts between two and three weeks in stainless steel, with gentle pumping-over and stirring aimed at extracting flavour and texture, never harshness. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for around nine months, mainly in stainless steel, with a possible small proportion in French oak barrels. Bottling is carried out with a minimal dose of sulphur dioxide.

Flavour

At first, Maison Réno Mercurey comes across as reserved and wild. As it breathes, notes of red cherry, fresh raspberry, violet, pepper, wild herbs, damp earth and a delicate hint of stem emerge. On the palate, it is light and juicy to start, but soon gains depth. The tannins are fine, slightly rough in their youth, and the acidity carries the red fruit through to a vibrant finish of sour cherry, black tea, dried flowers and cold stone. A transparent and somewhat untamed Maison Réno Mercurey: elegant, lively and with a touch of earthiness.
