Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is the second vintage of the wine from the banks of the Miño River. The 2021 Mundín was given a longer élevage of 18 months in a 3,000-liter French oak foudre. It feels a little closed, with austerity and contained ripeness, 12% alcohol, and it's possible that it didn't develop as much aromatic and flavor complexity as its sibling from the Sil Valley, San Pedro. The blend here is 80% Mencía and 20% Garnacha Tintorera and Grao Negro. It's light- to medium-bodied, with some honeyed notes and very nice tannins. The best is its mouthfeel. 3,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.

Features

Description

On the vertiginous slopes of the Sil valley, where work is done by hand, intuition and memory, Pedro Rodríguez cultivates the heritage of generations in Amandi, in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra. Since his parents founded Guímaro in 1991 - a name that in Galician means "rebel" - Pedro has been faithful to a way of making wine that prioritises origin over artifice. His winery was one of the first to bottle and join the D.O. Ribeira Sacra, when nobody was betting on an area in ruins. Today, his name is synonymous with authenticity.

Guímaro Mundín is born on terraces next to the Miño river, in deep granitic soils and vines over 60 years old. Mencía dominates the blend, accompanied by small proportions of Brancellao, Garnacha Tintorera and other local varieties. The result is a pure and honest expression of the most mineral Galician landscape.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand as always, without mechanisation. The grapes destined for Guímaro Mundín ferment with indigenous yeasts in open vats of used French oak, with 40% whole cluster, providing structure and tension. The wine is then aged for 18 months in 3,000-litre foudre, without fining or filtering, and with just a touch of sulphur before bottling. The intervention is minimal; the intention, maximum.

Taste

On the nose, Guímaro Mundín is restrained and precise. It opens with notes of sour cherry, redcurrant and wild raspberry, wrapped in hints of damp earth, dry leaf and pure minerality. There is a subtle background of cool spice, crushed stone and a faint hint of smoke, giving depth without detracting attention from the source. The palate is taut, vibrant, with a sharp acidity that runs through the palate like a thread. The tannin, fine and firm, frames an austere and precise fruit. The finish is long, with saline and stony echoes that reinforce its Galician character. A wine without make-up, which needs no embellishment to excite. Honest, upright, and deeply linked to its land.
