Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Chardonnay is their entry-level white, produced with grapes from different vineyards and terroirs, mostly old vines aged for 12 months in barrels and foudre and six months in tank. It has 12.5% alcohol and contained ripeness and is tasty and sapid, almost salty. It's very good for an entry level. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2025.

Features

Description

The story of Fumey Chatelain Arbois Chardonnay begins with a key decision by Raphaël Fumey and Adeline Chatelain: to defend the Jura identity without artifice. Instead of pursuing a globalised style, they opted to listen to what each parcel had to say. This JuraChardonnay was born as a blend of different vineyards on clay-limestone soils, with the idea of capturing a broad vision of the Arbois terroir. The climatic conditions of the Jura - with cold winters, unpredictable springs and cool nights in summer - allow for slow ripening, which favours the natural tension and acid balance of the wine. It is a wine that seeks purity, expression and precision.

Winemaking

After a manual harvest, the grapes destined for the Fumey Chatelain Arbois Chardonnay are directly pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Ageing lasts 18 months in a combination of barrels and large vats, with less than 20% of the wine resting in stainless steel. This mix of materials allows the freshness to be respected without sacrificing structure. There is no aggressive use of wood or excessive batonnage. Clarification is gentle, and the wine is bottled without invasive filtration, prioritising the natural texture of the wine.

Taste

On the nose, the Fumey Chatelain Arbois Chardonnay is initially somewhat closed, with a reductive tip that soon gives way to notes of ripe stone fruit, white flowers and a dry mineral background. There are also hints of aniseed, soft citrus and a very subtle herbal freshness. On the palate it is outstanding for its tension: a vibrant acidity leads the wine with firmness, revealing saline notes, lemon zest and yellow apple. This is a dry Chardonnay from the Jura, straight and serious, shunning the prominence of the oak to let the soil do the talking. The finish is clean, with a lingering minerality that invites further exploration. A white with nerve, more cerebral than voluptuous, made for those looking for precision and character.
