Description

At the top of Valtuille de Abajo, a small village in the heart of Bierzo, the Pérez family embodies the silent resistance of those who cultivate with soul, not in a hurry. Raúl Pérez, one of the most revered names in contemporary Spanish wine, handed over the baton of this cuvée to his nephew César Márquez, who has managed to give it a personality of its own without breaking with the family lineage. Castro de Valtuille Godello was born as an act of loyalty to the land and to tradition, but also as a brave decision: to recover old Godello plots planted on impossible slopes, between 500 and 700 metres above sea level, with soils of red clay, decomposed slate and boulders that seem to burn under the sun of the plateau.

In this area of Bierzo, the climate is an equation of contrasts: the Atlantic influence cools the nights, while the sunny days allow for slow and precise ripening. The Godello grape - rich, structured and deeply mineral - expresses itself here with elegant restraint, far from excesses and artifice. The philosophy of minimal intervention, manual harvesting and patient ageing are not a fashion at Castro de Valtuille: they are the echo of a way of understanding wine as a language of the landscape.

Winemaking

After a selective manual harvest in small boxes, the grapes destined for El Castro de Valtuille Godello undergo a gentle cold maceration before being pressed slowly, almost respectfully. Fermentation begins spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts, in used 500-litre French oak barrels, where it is also aged on the lees for 10 to 12 months, without batonnage or forced intervention. It is not clarified or filteredbefore bottling, in order to preserve intact that expression of purity and nerve that defines the wine. The result is a cellaring white, where texture and tension intertwine in a vibrant balance.

Taste

The first contact on the nose already warns that this is not a complacent Godello. The Castro de Valtuille Godello appears austere and penetratingly fragrant, with notes of hot stone, grapefruit peel, almond skin and dried flowers. Then, with some air, complexity emerges: wild fennel, green quince, white smoke and a faint echo of beeswax, as if the wine were remembering the sun that matured it.

On the palate, El Castro de Valtuille Godello is vertical, almost electric. The acidity sets the pace from the first sip, but it is not aggressive: it is precise, sharp as a flint knife. As it moves across the palate, it widens with an almost grainy, saline texture, as if one were chewing the earth of Bierzo. The finish is long, dry, with that aftertaste of lemon zest, water pear and crushed stone that invites another sip. There are no concessions to the easy: this is a wine that demands attention and rewards with depth.

For those who enjoy whites with soul, structure and a decidedly mineral character, this Godello is a quiet manifesto. More than a wine, it is a declaration of origin.
