Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The eponymous flagship village white 2023 Albamar comes from many different Albariño plots, owned and rented, on different soils but mostly granite. The juice from the pressing of the full clusters fermented and matured in stainless steel and oak foudres where it was kept with the lees for eight months. It has clarity, purity and transparency, which seems to define the 2023 vintage, and it is floral and perfumed but serious, with a vibrant palate. It is easy to drink, with moderate alcohol (12.5%), good freshness, a pH of 3.18 and 7.8 grams of acidity and finishes with a salty touch. It's very tasty, one of the finest vintages—if not the finest—for this bottling, which has also grown in volume. 95,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in April 2024.

Features

Description

Albamar Albariño is a white wine produced in the Rías Baixas DO by the Albamar family winery, run by Xurxo Alba since 2006. Located in the subzone of O Salnés, this winery stands out for its focus on Albariño. This wine is made from 100% Albariño from plots near the Ría de Arosa, planted in mostly sandy soils, which adds a distinctive mineral touch. The vines are between 25 and 40 years old, organically farmed and harvested by hand to preserve the freshness of the fruit.

Winemaking

Albamar Albariño is made by direct pressing of whole bunches and ferments spontaneously with native yeasts at a controlled temperature. Fermentation is partially carried out in stainless steel and in neutral oak barrels to maintain freshness without adding wood flavours. After fermentation, the wine rests on its lees for approximately five months, allowing for greater expression of the varietal characteristics of the Albariño grape. Bottling is carried out with light filtration and low sulphite content.

Taste

Albamar Albariño offers a refreshing sensory experience with a marked minerality. On the nose, it displays a range of aromas that include notes of fruit such as peach and pear, intertwined with citrus nuances of lemon and subtle floral hints. On the palate, its vibrant acidity is perceptible, providing remarkable freshness and highlighting its pure and expressive profile. This wine has a light texture and a finish that evokes a characteristic salinity, a reflection of its proximity to the sea. Perfect with seafood, fish and light dishes, it is ideal for those looking for an Albariño with an authentic and refreshing maritime character.
