Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Petit Verdot was produced with the grapes from a stony and sandy vineyard where the roots have easy access to water, as the water table is quite close to the surface, which helps the Bordeaux variety to achieve ripeness in the local conditions. From vines that were planted in 1991, the grapes were picked on October 11 at 11 hectoliters per hectare, which is extremely low. It fermented with their own selected yeasts, with a 10-day maceration. It went through malolactic in French oak barrels, 20% of them new, and the élevage was 17 months, 89% in French barriques and 20% in American oak ones. It did achieve ripeness, yes, reaching 15.2% alcohol. It's dark, ripe, showy and really impressive; it's dark and dense, with an oily texture, really powerful. It has abundant but very fine-grained tannins. The wines from 2021 have balance and aromatic complexity. I'm going to be conservative on the drinking window. 2,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

Features

Description

Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot is a single varietal red wine, made exclusively with the Petit Verdot variety. This wine, from the Abadía Retuerta PDO, is distinguished by its uniqueness and seduction. The vineyards, planted in 1991, are located at an altitude of 840 metres, in a sandy soil, which contributes to the unique characteristics of this wine.

Winemaking

The production of Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot begins with a careful selection of grapes on a sorting table. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with a maceration of 10 days. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels. The ageing process lasts 17 months in French and American oak barrels, which adds complexity and structure to the wine.

Taste

Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot is characterised by its maturity, structure and elegance. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, with floral notes and a very subtle spicy touch. On the palate, the wine is unctuous, with a smooth and sweet passage. The finish is long and refined, leaving a lasting and pleasant impression.
This wine is ideal for pairing with white meats, cured meats and rice dishes, and is best served at a temperature of 18°C. The combination of its unique terroir, meticulous winemaking and careful ageing make Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot a liquid jewel that reflects the excellence of viticulture in the Castilla y León region.
