Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas shows a riper aromatic profile than the 2021 I tasted next to it, but it keeps the poise and balance. The grapes were picked early, but the wine has a full 1% more alcohol (14.5%) and more sense of warmth. There's more acidity too, so the wine still comes through as balanced but a different balance, more Mediterranean and with some hints of cherries in liqueur. There was enough wine that filled some 850 bottles, and part was also used for the blend of Cien Lanzas.

Features

Description

On the shady slopes of the border between Cadalso de los Vidrios and Cenicientos, at an altitude of almost a thousand metres, a wine is born that seems to be whispered by the forest: 4 Monos La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas. Only 760 bottles were bottled of this rarity that encapsulates the wild and intuitive philosophy of 4 Monos Viticultores, a quartet of friends -including a biologist and a sommelier- who decided to rediscover the Sierra de Gredos when few still believed in its potential.

The plot, just a crack in the mountain between La Alberca and Lancharrasa, is located on a wooded hillside facing west, always in the shade, where the degraded grey granite soils barely allow the vines to take root. And in this struggle, the plant finds its purest voice. Here, the grape - an undeclared Altura Garnacha - is more than fruit: it is wind, stone, undergrowth and silence. Once, says Javier García, one of the "monkeys", they decided not to prune an entire row just to see how the plant responded to the natural rhythm of the environment. The result taught them more about the place than any manual.

Winemaking

The harvest of 4 Monos La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas was carried out manually, with extreme selection in the vineyard. Fermentation was carried out with 90% whole bunches, without destemming, and the rest with whole grapes without crushing. Spontaneous fermentation, without corrections, and ageing in a used 500-litre barrel for over a year. Bottled without fining or filtering.

Taste

From the glass, 4 Monos La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas displays a subtle and wild perfume: dried violets, scrubland, damp earth, eucalyptus. The palate is light but deep, with sharp acidity and soft tannins like granite dust. The finish is herbal, saline, fresh, like a breeze blowing through a forest glade. A delicate, essential wine, for those who know how to listen to what is not said.
