With almost 70 vintages and as many vinifications in his career, Régis Rossignol-Changarnier is one of the most important winegrowers in Burgundy and probably in the whole of France. He was the pioneer of sustainable farming, and avoided using chemicals in the winemaking process, which in his early days was not very well regarded by other winegrowers.
Régis always stuck to his principles and today his daughter and her team keep his winery Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier active, making the best wines and preserving the practice of environmentally friendly farming techniques and traditional winemaking.
The beginnings of the winery
The Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier winery was founded in 1966 by Régis, who had worked for several years in his parents' vineyards. His vineyards are located in Volnay, Beaume, Mersault and Pommard.
Régis' vineyards are located on chalky clay soils. They are cultivated in a traditional, non-interventionist way. Several ploughings are carried out throughout the year, which allows the roots to go down as deep as possible, and this allows the terroir to express itself better in each of the wines, which is easy to identify when tasting them.
In their winery, they follow a traditional vinification and fermentation process with indigenous yeasts. On the other hand, at the Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier winery, the wines are aged in French oak barrels for more than a year, in some cases, a percentage of new barrels and some used ones, and then in the bottle for more than three years.
Wisdom, patience and peace
Those who have had the pleasure of sharing a tasting with Régis Rossignol say that he is a very calm, peaceful and above all very wise person. In his cellar, he takes as much time as necessary for the wines to acquire the most interesting flavour and aroma. And this can take many months or even years.
In addition to the care and passion that Régis invests in each vintage, all the wisdom acquired during his years of experience working in his parents' vineyards, in his vineyards and in his cellar, has helped him to know exactly which are the best techniques to apply for each grape variety. Always respecting nature and taking care to carry out the process in a very natural way.
"The living legend of Burgundy".
Régis is a person who has spent his whole life living and working in the countryside, but his effort and passion have led him to become what many call "The living legend of Burgundy", and no wonder, since, with 70 years of travel, and a similar amount of winemaking of excellent quality, it is a recognition that he has well deserved.
Although biodynamic practices are now much more common throughout the winemaking process, when Régis Rossignol began to implement these techniques they were not so widely recognised and accepted.
As mentioned above, Régis strives to keep his wines organic and natural, and avoids the use of chemicals on crops, practising respectful agriculture, and also restricting the use of chemicals within his winery.
As a result, we can enjoy organic wines, full of character, with intense and deep flavours. In addition, the terroir is expressed much better in his wines thanks to the traditional method he implements in the cultivation of his vineyards.
Some of the most renowned wines of the Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier winery are Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier Bourgogne Pinot Noi, Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier Beaune 1er Cru Les Thpoundns, Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier Volnay, and Domaine Régis Rossignol-Changarnier Pommard.
