Château Talbot gets its name from Sir John Talbot or Connétable Talbot, a British military commander who died at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Some decades later, Château Talbot was purchased by Marquis d'Aux-Lally and remained property of the family until the end of the 19th century. In 1855, Talbot estate is awarded 4ème Cru Classé. Finally in 1917, Cordier family acquires the château and still nowadays are managing it. They where Bordeaux wine merchants and world-wide distributors of Château Talbot. They also had other châteaux such as Château Gruaud Larose in Saint-Julien, Château Cantemerle en Hâut-Médoc and Lafaurie Peyraguey in Sauternes.
Nowadays Nancy and Lorraine Cordier are Talbot winery's general managers. With the expert assistance of Stephane Derenoncourt from 2007, the quality of wines has considerably increased as well as its regularity and the style is more on the line of North American and Anglo-Saxon markets taste, which look for concentrated and mature wines.
Curiously enough, Château Talbot is one of the largest in extension Médoc estates, with 102 hectares in Saint-Julien commune, on a fine gravel and limestone rock bed where they cultivate the different red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (26%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). There is a small plot of 5 hectares for Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, exclusively devoted to the production of a unique white wine called Le Caillou Blanc.
The annual output of almost 300.000 bottles of Château Talbot red wine have an average ageing of 16 months in French oak barrels (60% new ones), time enough to offer a beautiful aromatic range of liquorice, raspberry, smoke, truffle and Italian coffee with a dense texture and round tannin.
