Château Smith Haut Lafitte is created in the year 1365 and has more than 600 years of history. The property gets the name “Smith” when George Smith purchased it in 1720 and “Haut Lafitte” because the vineyard is placed in some highlands named Lafitte. Since then the domain is known as Smith Haut Lafitte. In 1958 Bordeaux wine merchant Louis Eschenauer decided to purchase the château after knowing it well and exporting its wines to the United States. Finally in 1990, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is sold to Daniel and Florence Cathiard.
Daniel Cathiard is a famous skier, several Olympic Games ski champion. At his father's demise Daniel is forced to take over the family supermarket chain and at the same time, with his wife, he founds the sports store network Go Sport in France, Spain, Belgium and California. After the purchase of Smith Haut Lafitte, the supermarket and sports store chain are sold.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is placed in Martillac municipality, in Graved department and its wines are produced under the AOC Pessac-Léognan. It has 67 hectares of vineyard in deep gravel and stony soil devoted to the production of red and white wines. Grapevines are 30 years old in average and the plantation density is about 9.000 vines per hectare of the following varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (34%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (1%). As far as white grapes are concerned, the prevailing one is Sauvignon Blanc (90%), followed in the distance by Sauvignon Gris (5%) and Sémillon (5%).
Integrated to the vignoble there is the renowned wine spa Les Sources de Caudalie where they offer healthy skin treatments based on wine. Additionally there is a five stars hotel and two restaurants awarded with one Michelin star. If you happen to travel to that area, a visit to this magical entourage is a must!
In Smith Haut Lafitte they have the latest technology applied to vineyard extensive monitoring to appoint the best harvest moment. Through satellite views and with the oenoview software the labour at the winery is optimized, harvest dates are forecasted and high precision wine making is carried out. During the manual recollection, the team completes a first selection at the plant, and once the berries enter the cellar there is another sifts fulfilled at the selection table and through optical selection sensors.
How do these wines taste like? The fermentation of Château Smith Haut Lafitte is performed in great wood-covered tanks. Before the alcoholic fermentation, there is a period of cold maceration that allows the extraction of all the berries' skin aromatic compounds. Wine is then aged in French oak barrels (60 % new ones) for about 18 months. The château's annual production of 120.000 bottles of red wine offer liquorice, mocha and earthy tastes with bitter and rough tannins and are the archetype of great Pessac Léognan wines. Most recent harvests (from 2005 on) have proved a quality and regularity increase. On the other hand there is the production of 30.000 bottles of a freshly squeezed lime juice with acid grapefruit skin in a mineral basis, which renders Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc fresh and aromatic at a time.
