Buy Wine from Château Gazin
Château Gazin is a family winery managed by Soualle brothers since the beginning of the 20th century, being now the fifth generation. However, Gazin origins are dated back on the 12th century, when Bailliencourt family established the castle, and it is known that during the 18th century it was used as hospital for the pilgrim's on St. James' way (Camino de Santiago), that's where it gets its name their second wine: L'Hospitalet de Gazin.
Château Gazin is located at the east part of Pomerol plateau. Perhaps this is the subzone that produces the best wines of the appellation and there Gazin borders with other grand maisons such as La Fleur Petrus and Lafleur Gazin. The 26 vineyard hectares that the winery owns are virtually conquered by Merlot (80%) and a small part is left for Cabernet Franc. The typical soil is made of big gravels and clay bluish subsoil with iron oxides. Vines are 35 years old in average and the training method is based on the “lutte raisonée” principles, entailing the controlled use of synthetic products only when the plant needs them.
On harvest time, there is a first selection from the vine, and when the berries are collected and sent to the cellar, two additional screenings are carried through on the selection table. Previously to the alcoholic fermentation in concrete tanks, skin-contact maceration is done for some weeks in order to extract the entire aroma and colour from grapes. At Gazin, malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak vats and casks. Ageing in French oak barrels (50% new ones) is conducted subsequently.
Two wines and only 100.000 exquisite bottles are produced by Gazin: Château Gazin and L'Hospitalet de Gazin. Both wines follow the same pattern and Merlot has a leading presence in taste. They have the silky, round, well-built and elegant notes of great Merlot wines. You will only find purity and finesse in these Pomerol wines!
