Château Carbonnieux, one of the oldest and largest vineyards in the Bordeaux region, is located in Léognan, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Its history goes back almost eight centuries, with its vineyards extending over more than a hundred hectares. The Perrin family, which has owned the vineyard for four generations, has maintained its heritage and excellence.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Château Carbonnieux benefit from an exceptional terroir, the result of a rich geological past. The soil is composed mainly ofGunezian gravels and Pyrenean clayey gravels, deposited by the Garonne River. This geological diversity provides a unique terroir for vine growing. The estate covers 200 hectares, including 100 hectares of adjacent vineyards, with almost equal amounts of red and white grape varieties.
The vineyard is divided into 119 plots, each with its own personality and adapted to specific grape varieties. The 55 hectares of red grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, while the 45 hectares of white varieties are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris. The average age of the vines is 26 years for the reds and 30 years for the whites. Château Carbonnieux practices sustainable and eco-responsible agriculture, with a focus on biodiversity and environmental protection.
Philosophy
Château Carbonnieux 's winemaking philosophy focuses on the harmony between nature and human intervention. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, with meticulous care in selecting the best bunches. Vinification is personalised for each batch, ensuring a unique taste identity to be used in the final blending process.
For the white wines, the grapes are pressed in oxygen-free conditions, resulting in clear and aromatically subtle musts. Fermentation continues in barrels, in batches, according to their origin. For the red wines, the grapes are double sorted and gently crushed before fermentation, which lasts approximately 28 days at low temperature.
The ageing of the wines follows the Bordeaux tradition, with the whites undergoing battonage for 10 months in oak barrels, and the reds undergoing malolactic fermentation to increase their roundness, ageing for 18 months. The blending process is meticulous, selecting the best lots for the red and white Carbonnieux wines. The wines are refined and bottled, resting in the cellars before distribution.
