The history that surrounds Bodegas Luis Cañas
The history of Bodegas Luis Cañas is the beautiful and unique story of four generations of a family dedicated to the production of quality wine.
It begins with the founder, in 1928, when Luis Cañas was born, a hard worker with the motivation to achieve the best quality in his vineyards and bulk wines. His work and effort conquered the palate of the great wine merchants located in the Alhóndiga of Bilbao.
In 1970, when they sold bottled vintage wines sold in bulk at that time, not far from the Cuevas de los Curas, they created the winery that bears the family's distinctive name. There his passion is focused on the grape, the ingredient of the highest quality wines in the Rioja Alavesa.
In 1989, at the age of 33, Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took over the reins of the winery, maintaining the work philosophy and the beautiful family tradition, inheriting from his father the perfectionist character and the constant search for quality. His passion for wine means that he not only concentrates on young wines, but also begins to produce new wines, favouring crianza wines.
In 1994, a new winery was inaugurated, equipped with the best winemaking systems, and from then on the facilities were constantly improved and extended in order to continue improving the quality of the wine.
In this way, and with the passing of time, the wines of Bodegas Luis Cañas have made their way, and are currently recognised worldwide with the most prestigious awards.
Location of the vineyards
Bodegas Luis Cañas is located in Villabuena de Álava, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, one of the best wine-growing areas in Spain and the world.
The vineyards are mostly of small surface area and advanced age. The soils are of clayey, calcareous origin, with low fertility. On the other hand, most of them are on hillsides and terraces, with an ideal microclimate and a winemaking tradition of the area that make them unique.
It has taken 870 plots of land to complete the approximately 350 hectares between the winery's own vineyards and those controlled by the winery.
At the same time, there is a specific field department made up of an agronomist, two technical agricultural engineers and 7 workers, true craftsmen of the vineyard. It should be noted that all the work is carried out manually.
Winemaking
Luis Cañas uses different processes to make his wines, giving them a unique personality.
For the production of the young wines, the traditional local process known as "carbonic maceration" is still used. As for the wines that will later be aged in one of the winery's 5,800 barrels, the "despalillado" process is used.
It has selected some of the best cooperages, essentially French and American oak. The aim is to obtain the best characteristics from them. The continuous rotation of the fleet means that the average age of the vines is around 3 years.
As far as alcoholic fermentation is concerned, they have wooden vats and small stainless steel tanks depending on the wine to be made.
The modern facilities with the most advanced systems allow the oenologists to perfect and extract all their potential from the grapes.
It is a winery that offers guided tours
This winery offers the pleasant experience of observing in person the day-to-day work of those who cultivate, pamper, harvest and extract the nectar from each grape, each plot and each bunch. It will be an unforgettable experience!
And you, have you tried the wines of Bodegas Luis Cañas? You will love them!
