The Quinta da Pellada winery is located in a region with historical references dating back to 1527, in the town of Pinhanços, Portugal. In that year, a considerable sum of 80 pipes of wine was paid as a regional tax. Álvaro de Castro, a civil engineer, inherited this property in 1980 and decided to devote himself exclusively to it, re-establishing the family tradition of wine production that had been interrupted for a generation.
Inspired by the references of his youth and remembering the wines produced by the engineer Vilhena from the Nelas study centre, his first wine was presented with the 1989 vintage. At that time, he had the oenological support of the engineer Magalhães Coelho. In 2001, his daughter Maria Castro, with a background in oenology and a strong connection with the Quinta since her childhood, officially joined the team. Since 2005, after the death of engineer Magalhães Coelho, the winery has been supported by Ataíde Semedo and more recently by Tiago Félix. The winery has been increasingly oriented towards the production of natural wines, respecting nature as much as possible.Vineyards
The Dão Region is protected by three mountain masses: Buçaco, Caramulo and Serra da Estrela. These mountains shelter it from the Atlantic winds and provide very special climatic conditions. The Quinta da Pellada vineyards are planted at an altitude of between 450 and 600 metres on granitic soils. This terroir is characterised by cold, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The Pellada, Saes and Outeiro quintas are located on an elevation near Vila Nova de Tazém, in the Serra da Estrela sub-region.
Philosophy
The essence of Dão is discovered through a combination of terroir and tradition. The Dão region, located in central Portugal, is a wine-growing area blessed with a unique blend of elements that contribute to its exceptional wines. The terroir of the region encompasses not only the soil and climate, but also the soul of the land. The Dao and Mondego rivers flow through the landscape, with the latter playing a vital role in shaping the terroir. The Dão region boasts a variety of indigenous grapes, such as Touriga Nacional, known for its robust character, and Encruzado, which thrives in the higher altitude vineyards. In the winery, traditional winemaking practices are combined with modern techniques. The aim is for each wine to express the true essence of the terroir, believing that Dão wines embody the spirit of the land and carry within them the stories of past generations.
