Description

On the elevated slopes of Hunawihr, where the limestone rock is barely covered with earth, Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is born. This historic Alsace vineyard, mentioned since 1324, has belonged to noble houses and imperial courts before being acquired by the Zind-Humbrecht family in 1987. In 2021, they took a bold decision: to re-graft old Pinot Gris vines (planted in 1990) with Riesling. A year later, this wine was born, with the strength of a vineyard more than 30 years old and the precision of a contemporary execution.

Clos Windsbuhl is located at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, on poor soils of muschelkalk - limestone with fossil remains - with outcrops of bedrock. The cool, late Alsace climate, protected by the Vosges, allows for slow maturation, perfect for preserving the natural acidity and revealing all the minerality of the terroir.

Winemaking

The fermentation of Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is slow, natural and prolonged. The must is gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in large 40-year-old French oak barrels, where it remains for 18 months on the lees. No corrections or intense fining: everything is guided by the expression of the soil and the unique identity of the Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl.

Taste

On the nose, Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl, a dry, mineral Riesling, is restrained, precise: notes of lime, green apple, grapefruit peel, white flower and wet chalk. No fruity exuberance, but restrained elegance. The palate is straight, electric, with firm acidity and a saline texture that runs through the palate like an undercurrent. Long finish, with echoes of dried citrus, limestone and bitter almond. A wine of tension and verticality, cerebral and vibrant, that speaks with its own voice from the bowels of Clos Windsbuhl.
