Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Coming from a single parcel of 50- to 55-year-old vines in la Crau, Vieux Telegraph's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a blend of roughly 45% Clairette and 30% Grenache Blanc, with the balance split equally between Roussanne and Bourboulenc. Two-thirds were matured in foudre, with the other third matured in demi-muids, leading to a slightly honeyed nose with hints of toasted grain and gently warmed pineapple. It's full-bodied and creamy, balanced by a hint of bitterness on the long finish.

Features

Description

From the legendary Plateau de la Crau, one of the most emblematic areas of the southern Rhône, comes Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc, a wine that defies the conventions of the Mediterranean white. It was Henri Brunier who chose this stony terroir - covered with the famous galets roulés - convinced that only in its harshness could something truly unique be born. Today, the Brunier family continues to make this wine with a philosophy true to the land: minimum intervention, maximum expression of the place. The blend brings together Clairette (40%), Garnacha Blanca (25%), Roussanne (25%) and Bourboulenc (10%), noble and traditional varieties, grown in soils of molasses on clay with a high mineral content. The climate, warm but moderated by winds and cool nights, enhances the concentration without losing freshness.

Winemaking

After a manual harvest with triple sorting, the grapes for Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc are gently pressed and the must is clarified by static decanting. Fermentation takes place in barrels, demi-muids and 30 hl foudres, where the wine also rests for a year on its fine lees, gaining texture and complexity without losing its direct character. This multiple ageing brings balance between volume, structure and tension, while maintaining the unmistakable identity of Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc.

Taste

Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc is floral and mineral on the nose, with aromas of white flowers, citrus peel, beeswax and ripe stone fruit. The ageing contributes subtle notes of vanilla, dried fruits and mild spices. The palate is full-bodied, with an enveloping texture, precise acidity and a vibrant salinity that reflects the stony soil. Hints of bitter almond, fennel, grapefruit and white peach appear, all supported by a surprising freshness for its origin. The finish is long, with a noble citrus bitterness and a lingering minerality. It is a white with the soul of a red: deep, serious and long-lived. Ideal with seafood dishes, roast poultry or aged cheeses, but also capable of ageing gracefully for more than a decade. A classic white Châteauneuf du Pape that exudes terroir and character.
