Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2013 Viña al Lado de la Casa is a pure Monastrell produced by the Castaño family for Uvas Felices, the négociant arm of Vila Viniteca in Barcelona, with grapes from a vineyard called Las Gateras, quite a change from previous vintages when it was a blend with French grapes. It was matured in French barriques for one year. It seems to have a more commercial profile, with prominent wood and a sweetness of fruit that seems to be more than a sensation in the nose. Again, as I see in some wines from the region, it contains some 5.5 grams of unfermented sugar which might be responsible for the sweet, round sensation in the palate, nicely balanced by good acidity. It ends slightly bitter. 2,600 bottles.
