Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2021 El Esquilón has lower alcohol, 11.7%, and more freshness. It was produced in the same way as the 2020, with maybe a slightly shorter maceration. This is from a place close to El Ciruelo, but here the exposition is east-west. And even though the soils are similar, the tannic profile is different; here, the tannins are a little more rustic, more Nebbiolo than Pinot. This feels quite open on the fruit-driven nose; there is less reduction than in the 2020 I tasted next to it. 4,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.
