Description
Santa Cruz de Artazu, a tribute to the most honest and precise Garnacha from Navarre, was born from centenary vines planted between 1910 and 1920 in Artazu, in areas such as La Plana, Santa Agueda, Errotaldea and Sakanandia. These plots, rescued from oblivion, are grown at high altitude on poor limestone soils, where the Atlantic climatebrings freshness and sharpness. Faced with the convenience of new plantations, the Artazu team took a radical decision: to keep tradition alive and vinify old Garnachas as an act of fidelity to the landscape. The aim here is not volume, but character.
Winemaking
The Santa Cruz de Artazu grapes are harvested by hand with a double selection of clusters and berries. It is worked with care from the first moment: cold maceration for 24-48 hours to preserve the most delicate expression of the fruit. Then fermentation in open stainless steel tanks for 10-12 days, with gentle pumping over and precise control of the cap. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, followed by 12 months ageing in French oak (one third new), always respecting the fruity and mineral profile of the Garnacha.
Taste
Santa Cruz de Artazu opens with a sober but expressive perfume: ripe red fruit -cherry, pomegranate, raspberry- intertwined with notes of dried violet, black pepper and a slight background of cocoa and liquorice. On the palate it shows a polished texture, with fine, ripe tannins and a lively acidity that adds tension and lightness. The French oak is barely hinted at: a touch of vanilla, some toast, but never invasive. The finish is long, with a mineral echo of chalk and damp earth that recalls the chalky soil where it was born. Notes of black fruit and dried herbs persist, leaving a clean, serious, yet juicy sensation. A wine that looks to the past without nostalgia, and that speaks clearly of the place it comes from.
