Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 De La Finca comes exclusively from their own vineyards, 60% Xarel.lo, 30% Macabeu and 10% Parellada, and has the added complexity and nuance from a longer élevage, no less than 30 months in bottle with lees and closed with a cork after refermenting. It's bone dry, not adjusted, and sold as a brut nature. It has a bright, almost fluorescent yellow color and a very expressive nose with notes of yeasts and Mediterranean herbs, subtler, more complex and with smaller, more integrated bubbles and a vibrant, clean and precise palate, super tasty. It comes from the plots on slopes already classified by Pepe Raventós's grandfather. Here, they have lower yields, accentuated by the vintage, which is more marked in the wine, as it's always from the same plots. The whole clusters are pressed, looking for longer aging potential, and fermentation is in concrete, always thinking about a longer-lived wine. It's a generous wine from a generous year. 55,000 bottles and 1,000 magnums were produced.

Description

In Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the heart of Catalan viticulture, Raventós i Blanc cultivates a history that dates back to 1497. It was here that Josep Raventós Fatjó, in 1872, crafted the first bottle of sparkling wine using the traditional method. Centuries later, his descendant Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc founded a winery with a radical idea: to demonstrate that the Alt Penedès terroir could speak for itself, without the need for comparisons.

From this conviction was born Raventós i Blanc Gran Reserva de la Finca, made from Vinya dels Fòssils, a vineyard planted in 1964 on ancient marine soils rich in fossils and carbonates. In this environment, the Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada varieties reach their maximum expression under ecological and biodynamic practices: minimum tillage, plant cover, plant infusions and compost made on the estate itself. The aim here is not to intervene, but to accompany the mineral and sober character of the landscape.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, in small boxes. After a gentle cold pressing, each variety is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The cuvée is blended and bottled for secondary fermentation in the bottle. There, Raventós i Blanc Gran Reserva de la Finca is aged for more than 30 months on its fine lees, without the addition of liqueur d'expedition(brut nature). This slow and patient ageing refines the textures and accentuates the purity of the origin.

Taste

Raventós i Blanc Gran Reserva de la Finca has a pale yellow colour with golden reflections and very fine, constant bubbles. The nose is precise, restrained, mineral: hints of wet limestone, ripe citrus, fennel, and a faint note of bakery that is very well-integrated. Nothing is exuberant; everything is sculpted with intention. On the palate, it is vibrant and dry, with taut acidity supporting a firm, linear structure. The sensations of salinity, chalk and lemon peel merge with a creamy texture and elegant persistence.

Raventós i Blanc Gran Reserva de la Finca does not seek to seduce with frills, but with austere honesty and impeccable balance. Ideal with seafood, white fish or simply for those who want to understand the soul of the Penedès beyond the obvious.
