Description
Manuel Formigo Cholo was born in the heart of the Ribeiro region, in the Avia Valley, as a testament to his loyalty to the land and to Galicia’s historic grape varieties. Manuel Formigo, a winegrower from Beade, revives here the purest expression of the Loureira, produced entirely on his own – something rather unusual in the area. This decision speaks volumes about his character: courage, precision and absolute confidence in the vineyard. The vines, around 20 years old, grow on granitic and sabrego soils – poor, stony and well-drained – capable of imparting a marked mineral tension to the wine. The inland Atlantic climate and the winemaking tradition of the Ribeiro D.O. round off the character of this Galician white wine, produced in very limited quantities.
Winemaking
Manuel Formigo Cholo’s winemaking process is designed to preserve the identity of the grape and the landscape. The grapes are harvested by hand and the selection of bunches is carried out with great care. Once in the winery, the Loureira ferments in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, aiming for aromatic purity and maximum varietal clarity. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation, which is key to preserving its freshness, its crisp acidity and its vertical profile. The wine is then aged without any artificial enhancements, without oak ageing, and with minimal intervention prior to bottling. The result is a dry white wine of remarkable purity, precision and clarity.
Taste
On the nose, Manuel Formigo Cholo reveals a refined, fresh and highly distinctive profile, with notes of citrus, green apple, subtle stone fruit, dried flowers and herbs such as chamomile and pennyroyal. All this is enveloped in a distinct sensation of damp stone and salinity. On the palate, it is vibrant, straightforward and juicy, with an electric acidity that courses across the palate and a delicately enveloping texture. The finish leaves hints of lemon, fresh herbs and pure minerality. A Loureira wine with vigour, elegance and an authentic expression of Ribeiro wine.
