Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Mono C (monovarietal Castelão) was aged for 18 months in used French barriques and comes in at 13.9% alcohol. It was sourced from a single vineyard with 25-year-old vines in Baixo Corgo planted on yellow schist at 400 meters in altitude. When last seen, this was in fine form. Let's check in. This has evolved well and improved enough to answer at least some of my questions. It remains one of the most elegant Castelãos you'll find. So many are jammy and overripe. The grape itself tends to be flamboyant in its home base (Setúbal). This instead emphasizes finesse, freshness and elegance. The intense flavors—that sometimes become a bit too much—are subdued. That said, the juicy finish is still chock-full of delicious red fruits. The only remaining issue is where this is going. It is the first vintage, of course. So, the big question will be what this turns into as it ages. More classic Castelão certainly tends to age well. Tight and crisp, it seems to me this has the structure to both age and develop. It will be fun watching it do so. While loosening both up a bit, we'll remain a bit conservative in both evaluation and drinking windows just now. This certainly seems to be on the upswing.
