Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The young, balsamic and still faintly medicinal entry-level white 2023 Louro is dense, ripe and powerful at 13.9% alcohol, pungent and intense with a bitter twist in the finish. It's very tasty, almost salty, with cleanliness and precision, combining power with freshness and elegance. This is quite impressive and a preview of the rest of the 2023s to come. 215,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Features

Description

Louro is a white wine produced by Rafael Palacios in the sub-zone of the Bibei Valley, municipality of O Bolo, in Valdeorras. This wine is produced mainly with the Godello grape variety, grown in small plots at a minimum altitude of 600 metres above sea level. The vines have an average age of 25 years and are planted on coarse sandy soils of granitic origin. The viticulture is carried out following traditional and organic methods, without the use of aggressive treatments.

Winemaking

The fermentation of the must is carried out in 35 hectolitre foudres of French oak and the wine is aged on its fine lees for 4 months before bottling.

Taste

Louro has a bright straw yellow colour with a greenish rim. On the nose, it stands out for its freshness and an aromatic intensity that evokes plants such as fennel and gorse, as well as a delicate reminiscence of chestnut blossom, with citrus notes and hints of wet rock. On the palate, it is big on the attack, fresh but voluptuous and oily, with a complex and fruity passage. Its finish is marked by the saline minerality of its soil, giving it the distinctive personality and character of a great wine.
Louro is a wine that, thanks to its fresh and saline character, is ideal for pairing with cooked and grilled seafood, rock fish, sushi or white meats. It is recommended to be served between 9 and 12 ºC to better appreciate its organoleptic qualities.
